Decarbonizing Heavy Industry Sectors

Umwelt Energy, established in September 2022, is a trailblazing force in green fuels, with a primary focus on decarbonizing heavy industry sectors, particularly shipping. Founded by four renewable energy experts with extensive experience in sustainable solutions, Umwelt Energy takes a holistic approach to the energy transition, addressing the entire renewable energy value chain. In September 2022, Umwelt Energy, a new and innovative player in green fuels, was established in Denmark. Founded by four renewable energy experts with prior experience at Green Hydrogen Systems, Vestas, and Topsoe, Umwelt Energy aims to spearhead the decarbonization of heavy industry sectors, with a particular focus on shipping. Shared Passion for Environmental Impact and Social Responsibility The founders of Umwelt Energy, Alexander Eriksen, CEO, Niels-Arne Baden, CCO, Kenneth Bergstrøm-Andersen, CFO, and Saibaba Vutukuri, Managing Director of India, have been key drivers in building sustainable solutions for several decades - working across the value chain from innovation to implementation. Holistic Approach to the Energy Transition Based on their broad and deep experiences across the value chain, the founders of Umwelt Energy realized the importance of a holistic perspective. By examining the entire renewable energy value chain, they identified key areas where their expertise could generate the most significant impact. Green fuels like green methanol and green hydrogen, presented a huge opportunity to help remove fossil fuels from everyday operations, but the lack of maturity in the industry demanded new standards to be set. Powered by the need to address pressing environmental challenges and equipped with the knowledge to connect and accelerate energy solutions, the team decided to come together to establish Umwelt Energy. Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels A driving force behind the company is the need to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries and provide clean alternatives to heavy industry sectors like shipping and aviation. By leveraging their expertise in renewable energy technologies, the company aims to develop and implement sustainable alternatives to traditional fossil fuel consumption. To reach the necessary needs of the planet and people, Umwelt Energy is committed to taking the bold steps needed to transform industries and accelerate the global transition towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Denmark announces alliance on green fuels in India

Together with eight other Danish organisations Umwelt Energy is one of the founding members to join the alliance led by the Danish Embassy and the Consulate General of Denmark in India. This alliance and initiative is set to promote sustainable energy growth in India. CHENNAI, India – Denmark has announced its Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI) initiative in a bid to boost collaborative efforts between the two countries in the sustainable energy solutions sector and advance their joint global goal towards carbon neutrality. Led by the Danish Embassy and the Consulate General of Denmark in India, the new allianceis a strategic initiative poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the Green Fuels sector, including Green Hydrogen, by fostering innovation, collaboration, and partnerships between Danish industries and their counterparts in India. GFAI's primary objective is to promote sustainable energy growth in India by establishing an ecosystem that encourages collaboration among businesses, government entities, research institutions, and financial stakeholders from both the Indian and Danish sectors. Nine pioneering Danish organisations have already committed to the GFAI initiative as founding members including Maersk, Topsoe, Umwelt Energy, Mash Makes, European Sustainable Solutions, Novozymes, Danfoss, Brdr. Christensen and Hydrogen Denmark. Meanwhile, the GFAI advisory board members include India Hydrogen Alliance, Energy Consortium at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, the Danish Energy Agency and State of Green. The GFAI announcement comes at an opportune moment in history as India massively pushes towards achieving net zero emissions by 2070. Meanwhile, Denmark has topped the global Climate Performance Ranking 2024 and is also on the path to achieving net zero by 2045. The GFAI is demonstrative of activities under the Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) signed in 2020 between India and Denmark that seek to meet the partner countries’ ambitious climate targets. Ambassador of Denmark to India H.E. Freddy Svane is hopeful that such an international collaboration has the potential to greatly aid the global green transition. “Our planet needs action. The Tamil Nadu investors summit is happening at this very important junction. Danish companies bring skills to the green transition globally. Happy to see the special efforts through the Green Strategic Partnership to inspire India in her endeavours of greening its development. Umwelt Energy signs Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Government of Tamil Nadu to boost the green fuel transition in India

Umwelt Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a senior representative from the Indian Government of Tamil Nadu that describes the intentions from both parties to co-operate towards the establishment and growth of green fuel production in the state. CHENNAI, India – During the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024, representatives from the Government of Tamil Nadu met with Umwelt Energy to sign a MoU that outlines investment measures and facilitation to enable and support a specific green fuel project in Tamil Nadu. A project that will help lay the local foundation to boost green fuel production and ultimately help enable the green energy transition in India. Both parties intend to work closely together in this matter. For Umwelt Energy, this means solid financial investments, having proposed to invest approximately 800 million USD during the next four years. Furthermore, Umwelt Energy proposes to employ 1,800 people locally in Tamil Nadu within these four years (300 directly and 1,500 indirectly). For the Government of Tamil Nadu, the intent is to facilitate and support the project directly in the form of necessary infrastructural support and regulatory facilitation subject to applicable law. Umwelt Energy’s CEO, Alexander Eriksen, is thrilled about the signed MoU: “This MoU marks the beginning of a closer relationship between Umwelt Energy and Tamil Nadu and India in general. India is one of our most important allies in our common work for reaching net zero and the country is full of motivated, skilled people and great resources along with visionary politicians and authorities, which is exactly what the green transition needs. This will not only strengthen this partnership even more but help boost the green transition globally.” The state of Tamil Nadu is in the southeastern corner of India with an area of approximately 130,058 square kilometers and has a 1,076-kilometer coastline and is as such the state with the second longest coastline in the country. This location is ideal for setting up green fuel projects, says Umwelt Energy’s Managing Director for India, Saibaba Vutukuri: “India’s location, and especially Tamil Nadu’s location with its vast lands and long coastline, is ideal for setting up green fuel projects and -plants, and the geographical location of Tamil Nadu is perfect when it comes to accommodating trade and export globally. Not to mention the great number of skilled and motivated people already living in Tamil Nadu that can help the project succeed. I consider the prospect of this project to be a win-win situation for all parties involved.” The project in Tamil Nadu will be initiated during 2024.
